Memorandum of Understanding Signed Between Greenland's Nuuk Port and Two Canadian Deep-Water Port Projects

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 31, Sikuki Nuuk Harbour A/S of Greenland signed a memorandum of understanding with the developers of two deep-water port projects in Nunavut, Canada. The agreement involves Sikuki Nuuk Harbour A/S, owner and operator of Nuuk Port, Qikiqtaaluk AEDC, developer of the Qikiqtarjuaq deep-water port project, and West Kitikmeot Resources Corp., developer of the Grays Bay road and port project.

The three parties will cooperate in areas including Arctic port operational experience, maritime resilience, emergency response, vessel support, supply chains, infrastructure, and environmental protection. The initial phase includes collaboration on port operations, coordination of emergency response and vessel support capabilities, and sharing of Arctic port development and operational experience. The agreement does not cover engineering investment amounts, port construction contracts, or specific construction timelines.

Nuuk Port is the operational port facility in this collaboration, with its container terminal featuring a 310-meter main berth and a 50-meter auxiliary berth, equipped with two mobile harbor cranes and over 40,000 square meters of container handling area. Nuuk Port is currently undergoing expansion works, planning to add a 200-meter trawler wharf and a 150-meter dual-use military-civilian wharf, with completion expected in November 2028.

The two deep-water ports on the Canadian side remain in the development stage. The Qikiqtarjuaq maritime infrastructure project plans to construct a deep-water port on the west coast of Broughton Island, with the project's environmental screening completed in October 2025. The Grays Bay project plans to build a deep-water port, an airport, and approximately 230 kilometers of all-weather road; an impact statement was submitted to the Nunavut Impact Review Board in March 2026 and remains under review. In May, the Canadian government conditionally approved up to CAD 50 million in funding for the project's planning and pre-construction work.
