Phase II of Santander Port's Vertical Car Silo in Spain Enters Service, with Capacity for 9,328 Vehicles

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Santander Port Authority in Spain announced on September 2, 2026, that the second phase of the vertical car silo has been completed and put into operation. The silo is located on the Raos Central Breakwater at the Port of Santander.

With the second phase now in service, the silo covers an area of 207,200 square meters and can accommodate 9,328 vehicles. The silo comprises five levels, with four levels each covering 70,000 square meters and the top level covering 42,000 square meters.

The third and final phase is currently under construction and is expected to be completed before summer 2027. Upon completion, the silo's total area will reach 322,000 square meters, with total capacity increasing to 14,600 vehicles.

The total investment in the entire project amounts to nearly €70 million. César Díaz, President of the Santander Port Authority, stated that the project aims to enhance the port's vehicle handling capacity and operational efficiency by concentrating vehicle storage areas near the docks and rail marshalling yards, thereby strengthening combined rail-road transport.

The project has been incorporated into the Santander Port Authority's 2026-2030 investment plan, which anticipates a total public-private partnership investment of €245 million. The Port of Santander is a key hub for roll-on/roll-off vehicle transport in Spain, with 336,868 new vehicles transshipped through the port in 2025.
