Port of Houston Authority Issues 2026 Tender for Procurement of Ten Ship-to-Shore Container Cranes

The Authority stated that this represents the largest single crane procurement in the port's history and could become the largest single order of STS cranes ever placed in the United States.

The Port of Houston is the fifth-largest container port in the United States, ranking behind the Port of Los Angeles, the Port of New York, the Port of Long Beach, and the Port of Savannah. The Houston Ship Channel spans 52 miles, along which more than 200 public and private facilities are located. The Port of Houston Authority states that these facilities collectively contribute nearly $1 trillion annually to the U.S. economy. The port has been the fastest-growing container port in the United States for eleven consecutive years, with a growth rate four times the average of ports ranked 2nd through 10th, and double the growth rate of the port ranked 2nd.

As the fastest-growing major container port in the United States, the Port of Houston is continuously investing in maritime infrastructure to keep pace with demand. The Authority is currently constructing one large new container berth at each of its two container terminals, Bayport and Barbours Cut. The new STS cranes are part of this long-term infrastructure development strategy. The Authority stated that these cranes are critical to unlocking the economic potential of its container terminals—without them, the terminals cannot operate. The Authority is committed to identifying the right manufacturing partner for this strategic procurement.

The Request for Proposals (RFP) has now been released. The Authority stated that the focus of this procurement is to secure the best value for the Port of Houston and welcomes as many interested parties as possible to submit bids. Any bid that meets the substantive requirements, is submitted by the deadline, and conforms to the delivery schedule will be considered, even if other details vary; bids that do not fully conform to the specifications but represent viable alternative solutions are also encouraged.
