en.Wedoany.com Reported - National Highways has confirmed that a contraflow system on the M48 Severn Bridge will be installed on Saturday, August 1, with the aim of removing the system by 6:00 AM on September 27, when the road will fully reopen to traffic.

According to the South Wales Argus, these two months of traffic restrictions are part of a resurfacing trial ahead of a full upgrade of the old bridge, planned for 2027 and 2028. The trial resurfacing work will begin in August, with narrow lanes, a 30 mph speed limit, and overnight closures in place.

A final weekend closure will take place in September before the bridge reopens.

National Highways will start installing the contraflow system on August 1, closing the westbound carriageway and restricting the eastbound carriageway. This will be followed by a full closure from 8:00 PM on August 7 to 8:00 PM on August 8 to complete the setup of the contraflow system.

The contraflow system will then remain in place until September 18, with one narrow 3-meter lane in each direction on the eastbound carriageway, and a 30 mph speed limit enforced by average speed cameras.

During the resurfacing work, the westbound carriageway will be closed throughout.

The westbound footpath will also be closed during this period, but the eastbound footpath will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Signage will be installed to guide all non-motorized users.

To dismantle the contraflow system, a final full closure of both carriageways is planned from 8:00 PM on September 18 to 8:00 PM on September 19. Additional lane closures and speed restrictions will then be in place until September 26 to allow workers to remove equipment and conduct final inspections.
