US SRP to Propose Over 1.6 GW Hybrid Resource Project in September

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Salt River Project (SRP) in the United States recently announced plans to develop a hybrid resource project named the Marigold Energy Center to meet the growing electricity demand in Maricopa and Pinal counties, Arizona. Board approval for the project is expected in September.

Located approximately 45 miles south of Phoenix, the project is designed to include 400 MW of battery energy storage, 600 MW of solar power generation, up to 675 MW of natural gas power generation, and will be accompanied by the construction of a new substation and 4 miles of 230 kV transmission lines.

The Marigold project was announced last year, and information sessions were held for the local community in Stanfield. SRP plans to host an in-person open house in Stanfield on July 28 and a virtual meeting on July 29 to solicit public input and address questions.

The project has the potential for collaboration with Electrical District No. 3 (ED3). SRP stated that ED3 is evaluating a partnership with SRP to procure a portion of the electricity, thereby serving local customers at reliable and competitive prices.

To meet growing system reliability needs and advance the clean energy transition, SRP has also recently advanced several energy storage projects. In June, SRP reached an agreement with Google-backed Energy Dome to deploy a 19 MW, 10-hour duration carbon dioxide-based battery system, which will be co-located with the Coronado Generating Station. In October, SRP selected ESS Tech to develop a 5 MW/50 MWh iron flow battery through a pilot project and energy storage purchase agreement.
