Quintana Roo, Mexico plans to finance 50 solar and storage projects by 2027

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Serfimex Capital has signed an agreement with the government of Quintana Roo, Mexico, to provide financing support for solar energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and energy efficiency projects in the state, aiming to complete 50 installed projects by 2027. Related financing activities will be carried out within the state through its Serfimex Solar platform.

In the solar project sector, financing is applicable to photovoltaic installations with an investment threshold of 1 million Mexican pesos and a maximum installed capacity of 0.7 megawatts. Financing options offer terms of up to 72 months, with options including no upfront payment, principal repayment grace periods, and fixed or floating interest rates. For battery energy storage systems, the company stated that financing has no capacity limit and will provide developers with tools for modeling the financial returns of storage projects.

Serfimex also noted that eligible renewable energy equipment may qualify for Mexican tax incentives for machinery used in renewable energy generation, subject to specific application requirements. The agreement also includes technical and financial training programs and activities for installers, developers, and businesses, with over 50 integrators from the Yucatán Peninsula attending the signing ceremony.

Óscar Alberto Rébora Aguilera, Secretary of Ecology and Environment of Quintana Roo, stated that financing remains one of the main obstacles to advancing solar projects, and the agreement aims to support investments in distributed generation, energy storage, and energy efficiency. Carlos Kamkhaji Ambe, President of Serfimex Capital, revealed that the company has partnered with over 800 integrators nationwide in Mexico, supporting approximately 1.3 billion Mexican pesos in clean energy investments, and currently provides financing for more than 150 clean energy projects in the country.

According to the Quintana Roo state government, the region has excellent solar power generation conditions, with direct normal irradiance exceeding 5.0 kWh/m² per day in more than half of the area, and reaching up to 6.0 kWh/m² per day in some coastal areas. Citing data from Mexico's Energy Regulatory Commission, the state government noted that distributed generation installed capacity in the state has grown from 376 kW in 2017 to 71.66 MW in the first quarter of 2024, with 8,820 grid connection contracts recorded during the same period. Meanwhile, electricity demand in the Yucatán Peninsula continues to grow, with Mexico's National Energy Control Center forecasting an average annual growth rate of 3.9% through 2028 and 3.6% through 2037. Quintana Roo stated that expanding distributed generation and energy storage will help reduce reliance on fossil fuel electricity from other regions to meet energy needs in the tourism, industrial, and urban sectors.
