Wedoany.com Report-May 31, The Victorian state government in Australia has confirmed that the Sunshine Station superhub project, spanning over 6km from West Footscray to Albion, is advancing with procurement now underway. The initiative includes constructing two new regional platforms, an extended concourse at Sunshine Station, three new rail bridges, upgraded tracks, advanced signaling technology, and realigned passenger and freight lines to enhance rail capacity and efficiency.
Design and planning efforts for the Sunshine station transformation are currently underway, with construction expected to start in early 2026.
The project is structured into five work packages: enabling works, freight line works, metropolitan line works, regional line works, and the Albion Station redevelopment. The enabling works package, set to be awarded in early 2026, will involve diverting and protecting utilities to prepare for major construction. The regional line works will be delivered through a new alliance, while existing alliances under the Level Crossing Removal Project, aimed at eliminating congested level crossings in Melbourne by 2030, will handle the remaining packages.
A Victorian government spokesperson stated: “This programme of works is designed to prepare Sunshine Station to handle over 40 train services per hour, significantly increasing capacity for services to the growing western regions and the airport.” The project’s design and planning are progressing, with construction slated to begin in early 2026 and completion expected by 2030. It is anticipated to create 1,300 jobs during its delivery, boosting local employment.
The use of existing alliances is expected to streamline operations, drawing on their expertise in rail network enhancements and level crossing removals. By increasing Sunshine Station’s capacity, the superhub will support growing demand in Melbourne’s western regions, improving connectivity to key destinations, including the airport, and enhancing the overall rail network’s reliability.
In a separate development, the Victorian state government announced that the Gippsland Line Upgrade is nearing completion. This project will improve train services for Gippsland communities, with final construction activities scheduled later this year. Together, these initiatives reflect Victoria’s commitment to modernizing its transport infrastructure, fostering economic growth, and improving public transport access across the state.
