Wedoany.com Report-May 27, Kaduna Electric, a Nigerian utility company, has announced a 100 MW solar project with integrated battery energy storage to enhance electricity supply in northern Nigeria. The initiative, formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed on Friday with J-Marine Logistics Limited, based in Abuja, and its primary investor, ASI Engineering Limited, targets the states of Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi. The project allocates 60 MW to Kaduna, 20 MW to Sokoto, and 10 MW each to Zamfara and Kebbi.

Umar Abubakar Hashidu, CEO of Kaduna Electric, stated: “The project will significantly boost electricity supply, support industrial growth and stimulate sustainable economic activity.” The solar initiative aims to improve power reliability, fostering economic development and sustainability across these regions. The inclusion of battery storage will ensure consistent energy delivery, addressing peak demand and reducing outages.

Local media reports indicate that J-Marine Logistics is exploring the development of a solar panel production facility in Kaduna, with a potential annual capacity of 200 MW to 500 MW. This proposed plant could supportPan> further bolster local renewable energy infrastructure, supporting Nigeria’s broader clean energy objectives.

By the end of 2024, Nigeria’s cumulative solar capacity reached 144 MW, a slight increase from 143 MW the previous year, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The Kaduna Electric project, alongside other initiatives like the March agreement between Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency and Oando Clean Energy for a 1.2 GW solar assembly plant in Lagos, reflects Nigeria’s growing commitment to expanding renewable energy to meet rising electricity demands.

The collaboration between Kaduna Electric, J-Marine Logistics, and ASI Engineering highlights a strategic effort to address energy challenges in northern Nigeria. By leveraging solar power and storage technology, the project aims to deliver reliable electricity, support industrial activities, and contribute to sustainable economic growth in the region.
