Wedoany.com Report-May 27, Egypt’s Ministry of Transportation has advanced its sustainable transportation goals with the signing of an infrastructure works contract for the rehabilitation of Alexandria’s Raml Tram. The agreement, aligning with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s vision for green mass transit systems, was signed by the National Authority for Tunnels and a joint venture of Arab Contractors and Hassan Allam. The signing, witnessed by Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, marks a key step in modernizing Alexandria’s transport network.

The contract was formalized by Dr. Tarek Goueili, Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels, Engineer El Sayed Al Wazir, Vice Chairman of Arab Contractors, and Hassan Allam, Chairman of Hassan Allam Company. Attendees included key company representatives: Engineer Hassan Ibrahim, Engineer Ahmed Shawky, Engineer Sherif Tarek, and Engineer Alia Abdel Azim. Kamel El Wazir emphasized the project’s role in supporting Alexandria’s broader transportation strategy.

The Raml Tram upgrade, executed by the two Egyptian firms, will extend the line to 13.2 km, featuring 24 stations across 5.7 km above ground, 7.3 km elevated, and 276 m underground. The tram will connect Victoria Station to Raml, integrating with the Alexandria Metro at Victoria and Sidi Gaber stations. Upon completion, travel time will decrease from 60 to 35 minutes, with operating speeds increasing and headway times reduced from nine to three minutes. This will boost passenger capacity from 4,700 to 13,800 per hour in one direction.

In June 2024, a separate contract was signed with Hyundai Rotem from Korea to supply 30 tram units for the metro project, complementing another agreement to localize and provide 21 metro train units for the Alexandria Metro’s first phase, currently under construction. These efforts reflect Egypt’s commitment to enhancing sustainable urban mobility, improving connectivity, and reducing environmental impact in Alexandria.

The Raml Tram rehabilitation underscores Egypt’s focus on developing efficient, eco-friendly transport infrastructure. By upgrading the tram and integrating it with the metro system, the project aims to enhance accessibility and support economic growth in the region.
