en.Wedoany.com Reported - Transport Certification Australia (TCA) has completed Level 2 type approval of the Geotab GO9B telematics device, permitting its use in Telematics Monitoring Application (TMA) and Road Infrastructure Management (RIM) under the National Telematics Framework.
Based on the Telematics Device Functional and Technical Specification, TCA conducted an independent assessment of the GO9B, model GDSAA1, covering physical performance, operating environment, and data security. The approved hardware comprises two Geotab-branded stock keeping units (SKUs): GO9-LTEB1TLS and GO9-LTEB2TEN. The previously approved GO9-LTM retains its approval status, with three additional hardware variants—D, E, and F—now included. Both the GO9B and GO9-LTM support Level 1 and Level 2 assurance, depending on the approved hardware and firmware configurations.
Geotab obtained TCA Application Service Provider certification in 2025. Eligible Australian heavy vehicle operators can use the GO9B or GO9-LTM through its platform when registering for TMA and RIM programs, integrating compliance functions with fleet processes such as vehicle tracking and operational reporting, thereby reducing the need to operate a separate telematics environment solely for government access or road use programs. The GO9B approval also provides another recognized pathway for fleets adopting newer Geotab hardware to participate in national framework programs.
TMA records trusted information such as vehicle location, time, and identity to support heavy vehicle access programs, some of which also involve vehicle configuration information and driver declarations. Geotab states that the application supports Smart On-Board Mass systems. RIM collects trusted road use information from registered vehicles, enabling road managers to understand network usage and support infrastructure planning. Both applications operate under the National Telematics Framework, which governs the exchange of trusted vehicle data among government agencies, transport operators, and technology providers.
TCA type approval is based on performance requirements and does not mandate a specific device format; aftermarket units, embedded vehicle systems, tablets, or other computing and communication platforms may all serve as compliant devices. Paddy Goodall, General Manager of Service Delivery at Austroads, stated that the process is designed to remain device-agnostic, with any telematics device meeting the physical, environmental, and data security requirements in the specification eligible for type approval. Independent approval gives governments and operators confidence that submitted data is generated by hardware meeting established technical requirements, and supports consistent participation in access and infrastructure applications across different vehicle and technology platforms.
Geotab noted that this approval comes at a time when Australian operators face evolving heavy vehicle compliance and certification requirements. The company expects that certified telematics technology will help fleets manage government program obligations alongside safety and operational needs. However, type approval does not automatically register vehicles into TMA or RIM; operators must still meet applicable program requirements and use approved devices, firmware, and service provider arrangements.
