en.Wedoany.com Reported - Heidelberg Materials UK is progressing foundation works for the UK's first cement plant carbon capture facility at its Padeswood site in North Wales.
More than 60,000 tonnes of aggregate have been used to establish the construction area, and two piling rigs have installed over 600 concrete piles, including approximately 5,000 cubic metres of concrete for retaining wall construction.
All concrete used to build the carbon capture facility incorporates evoZero carbon-captured near-zero cement. This product is manufactured using carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology at Heidelberg Materials' plant in Brevik, Norway, and is certified through a chain-of-custody model.
Simon Willis, CEO of Heidelberg Materials UK, expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction on the Padeswood CCS project, noting that the project is using evoZero cement wherever possible to reduce its carbon impact, and highlighted the symmetry of using cement produced via the CCS process to build another piece of CCS infrastructure.
The current phase of the project is being delivered by Worley, which, together with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract for the project.
Completed preparatory work includes installing security facilities and newt fencing, relocating overhead power lines and cables, and removing 25,000 tonnes of topsoil for reuse during site restoration. Around 80 construction workers are currently on site daily, with this number expected to double by the end of the year.
The Padeswood project is based on Heidelberg Materials' carbon capture development at its Brevik cement plant in Norway, where the facility is designed to capture approximately 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, representing around 50% of the plant's emissions.
Once operational, the Padeswood facility is expected to capture approximately 95% of the existing cement plant's carbon emissions, equivalent to around 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year at full capacity.
