Heidelberg Materials UK First to Apply Dual Low-Carbon Cementitious Materials in Concrete

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 9, Heidelberg Materials UK announced that it is supplying approximately 3,000 cubic meters of evoBuild low-carbon concrete for the basement slab construction of the 33-35 Piccadilly commercial redevelopment project in London's West End. This is the first time the company has simultaneously used evoBuild low-carbon cement and evoBuild low-carbon ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) to formulate concrete in a UK project. Compared with the standard CEM I cement system, this solution can reduce associated carbon emissions by approximately 35%.

The project owner is The Crown Estate, the architectural design is undertaken by DSDHA, the main contractor is Kier, and the groundworks and civil engineering contractor is Realtime Civil Engineering. Heidelberg Materials worked with the construction team to develop the concrete mix. The material is mainly used for the basement structure, and low-carbon concrete with a waterproofing system is also provided to meet the seepage prevention requirements of the underground structure. All concrete is supplied by Heidelberg Materials' plant in King's Cross.

The evoBuild low-carbon cement used in this concrete comes from Heidelberg Materials' Brevik plant in Norway. The plant has commissioned a carbon capture and storage system, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions associated with cement production by approximately 50%. evoBuild GGBS is also added to the mix to replace part of the traditional clinker-based cementitious material and to improve the density of the concrete and the durability of the underground structure.

The 33-35 Piccadilly project is a redevelopment of an existing office building, with plans including retail and office functions. The project has set building performance targets such as NABERS 5 stars, WELL Platinum, and BREEAM Outstanding. This low-carbon concrete has entered the actual engineering supply stage, not laboratory testing or trial mixes.

Heidelberg Materials has previously advanced other engineering applications of carbon-captured cement in the UK. In July, the company and Marley used evoZero cement based on the Brevik carbon capture system for low-carbon concrete roof tiles for the first time in the UK; the new milestone at the 33-35 Piccadilly project is the first time that low-carbon cement and low-carbon GGBS have been used simultaneously in a UK cast-in-place concrete project.
