The project stabilised the hillside, reinforced the road base to withstand severe weather and rockfall threats, and reduced the gradient of a steep section near the top of the gap used by heavy vehicles.
The section is located within the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area, where the narrow working terrain posed significant constraints on construction and access. The project was delivered in stages to keep the highway operational throughout the reconstruction period. Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said maintaining vehicle access was a core requirement of the project, with around 6,000 vehicle movements continuing to use the route daily during construction. Maintaining access was particularly important for freight operators, local businesses, and regional communities with limited alternative routes.
The Cunningham Highway connects south-east Queensland with the Darling Downs and inland freight routes, carrying agricultural produce, supplies, and general goods, serving farmers, transport operators, commuters, and tourism in the Scenic Rim and Southern Downs regions. A closure or restriction at the gap would result in significant detours, increased fuel costs, and longer delivery times. The upgrade reduced the gradient of the steepest section near the summit, providing trucks with a gentler ascent, which can reduce speed loss and fuel consumption for fully loaded vehicles climbing the hill, narrow the speed differential between trucks and other vehicles, and improve journey consistency. This is expected to enhance the reliability of the section through the gap and reduce the likelihood of future disruptions affecting regional supply chains.
The Australian Federal Government and the Queensland Government funded the project through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, used to repair bushfire-damaged infrastructure and improve long-term resilience. Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said the project restored a critical national transport route. State MP for Scenic Rim Jon Krause said the Cunningham Highway was a vital link for people and goods moving in and out of the Scenic Rim region.
