The battery energy storage system has a capacity of 250 MW and is co-located with the 430 MW Old 300 Solar project. Old 300 Storage operates independently from Old 300 Solar, supplying power when the grid needs it most and helping to improve grid stability.
Melissa Peterson, President of Ørsted Americas Onshore, stated that battery storage provides significant value by delivering much-needed power to the ERCOT grid during periods of tight supply and demand. The commercial operation of this project will provide additional resources to the Texas grid operator, thereby enhancing grid reliability and offering more diverse, localized energy options as electricity demand continues to grow.
Old 300 Solar has been powering approximately 80,000 homes and businesses in Texas since 2024. Together, the two projects will contribute approximately $110 million in property tax revenue to the local community, supporting local infrastructure, schools, and emergency services.
The battery energy storage system for the project is supplied by Tesla, with Megapacks manufactured in Lathrop, California. Ørsted and Tesla have also proactively partnered with the Needville Fire Department to conduct comprehensive training on the latest product technology and safety response protocols.
