en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 6, RWE U.S. Offshore, a subsidiary of German energy group RWE, reached a $1.22 billion settlement agreement with the U.S. Department of the Interior, relinquishing its three offshore wind leases in the New York Bight, off the coast of California, and off the coast of Louisiana. The agreement resolves related claims filed by RWE against the U.S. government and provides $1.22 billion in settlement funds. RWE stated that these projects no longer have a viable path to obtaining permits within the foreseeable future.
The offshore wind leases involved in this matter are all in the early stages of development. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), the Community Offshore Wind lease in the New York Bight has not yet submitted a Site Assessment Plan or Construction and Operations Plan; the Canopy Offshore Wind lease off the coast of California has likewise not yet submitted a Construction and Operations Plan. The most recent progress documents for the lease off the coast of Louisiana show that no site surveys were conducted in 2025, none are scheduled for 2026, and transmission planning and export cable routing have not yet been initiated.
In parallel with the exit from offshore wind leases, RWE is redirecting a portion of its capital toward gas-related projects. The company will invest $900 million to acquire a 16% indirect interest in a Louisiana LNG project, with the funds to be used for terminal construction; RWE Americas has also signed a $300 million gas turbine reservation agreement to secure future power generation equipment supply for its U.S. flexible gas power business. The company is currently advancing a pipeline of 15 natural gas peaking power projects in the United States.
These arrangements align with RWE's U.S. investment plan announced in March of this year. RWE stated at the time that it plans to invest approximately €17 billion net in the United States from 2026 to 2031, adding approximately 9 gigawatts of net generating capacity by 2031, increasing its U.S. generation asset base from the current approximately 13 gigawatts to 22 gigawatts. The company is also incorporating flexible gas power generation into its U.S. portfolio, advancing it alongside existing wind, solar, and battery storage assets.
RWE's agreement covers three U.S. offshore wind leases in the New York Bight, California, and Louisiana, while its other offshore wind operations globally continue to move forward. RWE disclosed that the company currently has 18 offshore wind farms in operation worldwide, 4 under construction, and has secured a total of 6.9 gigawatts of project capacity in the most recent U.K. offshore wind auction round.
