en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 12, the City of Cape Town municipal government disclosed that it will receive technical assistance valued at over R1 million from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) through the fifth phase of the South Africa–Germany Energy Programme (SAGEN 5), to advance the city's energy strategy and improve power system planning.

SAGEN 5 spans three years and employs a flexible support mechanism. The City of Cape Town's Energy Directorate and other relevant departments can apply for specialized technical services based on actual needs, with the scope of work covering grid planning, operational performance improvement, energy management capacity building, and modernization of electricity services.

The technical assistance will also support Cape Town's participation in the proposed South African wholesale electricity market, involving municipal-level electricity trading service reforms and related policy and regulatory adjustments. The city has previously formulated an energy strategy aimed at improving power supply reliability through expanded independent power procurement, advancing electricity trading, and upgrading the municipal grid.

Cape Town is implementing a medium-term grid resilience upgrade plan with an investment of approximately R6 billion. GIZ will provide capacity support for this plan through planning methodologies, specialized consulting, and personnel training; this assistance of over R1 million constitutes an investment in technical services and is not construction funding for the R6 billion grid project.
