Japan's Ministry of the Environment: Subsidies to Focus on Perovskite from FY2027, Targeting 20 GW

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Japan's Ministry of the Environment has decided that, starting in fiscal year 2027, traditional silicon solar panels, whose installation costs have fallen significantly, will be excluded from the scope of new subsidy programs.

This adjustment aims to concentrate government support on next-generation technologies such as perovskite solar cells, balancing industrial competitiveness with environmental policy goals. The Ministry of the Environment stated that Japan accounts for approximately 30% of the global iodine supply, and iodine is a key raw material for perovskite cells. Perovskite cells are lightweight and flexible, making them suitable for installation in locations where traditional modules are difficult to deploy.

In November 2024, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) indicated that it expects to deploy approximately 20 GW of new photovoltaic systems based on perovskite technology by 2040.

In October 2025, Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) launched a six-year research and development program to advance the large-scale manufacturing and field testing of perovskite tandem solar cells. NEDO also defined 24 research pathways for a program spanning 2025–2029, covering next-generation solar cells, system integration, grid stability, and recycling, and released a solar strategy to support Japan's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
