China's HyperStrong Builds 1.6GWh Energy Storage Project in Germany, Construction Begins
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 31, the groundbreaking ceremony for the GigaBattery Boxberg 400 large-scale battery energy storage project in Saxony, Germany, was held. Project owners LEAG Clean Power GmbH, HyperStrong International (Germany) GmbH, Siemens Energy, and other partners jointly initiated construction. The project has a grid connection capacity of 400MW and an energy storage capacity of 1600MWh, forming a 4-hour energy storage system. It is located on approximately 6 hectares of remediated land at the former Unit 2 site of the Boxberg power plant.

HyperStrong is responsible for the construction of the project's battery energy storage system, with a scope of work including the supply of lithium iron phosphate battery systems, electrical equipment system integration, and turnkey construction of the energy storage power station. The project adopts the HyperBlock III liquid-cooled energy storage system. On November 18, 2025, LEAG Clean Power signed the GigaBattery Boxberg 400 EPC contract with HyperStrong's German subsidiary. This groundbreaking marks the project's transition from the preliminary contract and approval phase to the on-site construction phase.
The grid connection works for the project are being implemented by Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy will simultaneously construct a new 380kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) station, with equipment to be used for connecting the energy storage power station to the transmission network of 50Hertz, Germany's transmission system operator, as well as for connecting renewable energy generation facilities around the Boxberg power plant. The relevant high-voltage switchgear equipment will be supplied by Siemens Energy's Berlin plant.
According to the project construction timeline released by LEAG, the construction application for GigaBattery Boxberg 400 was submitted in January 2026. The local technical committee in Boxberg subsequently approved the construction permit application, with the permit covering the construction of the battery energy storage facility and site development. The project was previously planned to start construction in early summer 2026, but the groundbreaking ceremony was actually held on August 31. LEAG currently targets commissioning between the end of 2027 and early 2028.
Prior to the start of construction of the energy storage project, the cooling towers of the former old power plant in Boxberg had already been demolished, and the project site had been cleared and environmentally remediated. LEAG is leveraging the existing power infrastructure at the former power plant site to build large-scale energy storage facilities. GigaBattery Boxberg 400 has been incorporated into its GigawattFactory project system. This system also includes the GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 project in Brandenburg, which is planned with a scale of 1000MW/4000MWh.
GigaBattery Boxberg 400 is designed with a 4-hour energy storage duration. The operating functions published by LEAG include second-level response to grid fluctuations, provision of primary and secondary frequency regulation services, and charge-discharge regulation to smooth fluctuations in wind and solar power generation. Based on LEAG's calculation methodology, the 1600MWh storage capacity is equivalent to approximately 4 hours of electricity consumption for around 640,000 households.
Project owner LEAG Clean Power is responsible for LEAG Group's battery energy storage and dispatchable power projects. In addition to the Boxberg project, LEAG also commenced construction of the 100MW/400MWh Heinersbrück GridBattery project in August this year. GigaBattery Boxberg 400 is the 1.6GWh large-scale energy storage project that has entered the substantive construction phase following the EPC contract signing between HyperStrong and LEAG in 2025.
