Singapore Airlines launches daily flights between Singapore and Western Sydney from November 23

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Singapore Airlines (SIA) will launch daily passenger flights between Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) and Western Sydney International (Nancy Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) on November 23, becoming the first long-haul carrier to serve the airport. Following Jetstar and Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines will be the third airline to offer commercial passenger services at Western Sydney Airport; VietJet Air also plans to launch routes to the airport in January 2027.

Singapore Airlines ranks 11th among global long-haul passenger carriers; within Southeast and East Asia, this Star Alliance member is the largest carrier by long-haul operations, with All Nippon Airways second and Cathay Pacific third. According to OAG data, from September 2026 to July 2027, Singapore Airlines' long-haul network from Changi covers 37 destinations; long-haul points account for approximately 45% of the airports served by SIA. Due to typically lower frequencies on long-haul routes, such flights represent about 34% of SIA's total departures.

The new route will operate daily, year-round. The great-circle distance from Changi to Western Sydney is 3,374 nautical miles (6,249 kilometers). Singapore Airlines will deploy the 303-seat Airbus A350-900, configured in the so-called "medium-haul" layout, featuring 40 business class seats (1-2-1 arrangement) and 263 economy class seats (3-3-3 arrangement, with 32-inch seat pitch).

There is currently no indication that the three-class, 253-seat A350-900 with premium economy will be deployed on the Western Sydney route. This configuration is currently assigned to daily flights to Melbourne Airport (MEL) and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD; until October 24, and subsequently from March 28, 2027); from November 1, daily flights to Brisbane Airport (BNE) will also adopt this layout.

Western Sydney Airport operates 24 hours a day with no slot or curfew restrictions, in stark contrast to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. The fully unrestricted operating conditions allow Singapore Airlines to schedule late-night arrivals and departures—slots the carrier has long sought but been unable to secure at Kingsford Smith Airport.

Combining Kingsford Smith Airport and Western Sydney Airport, from November 23, Singapore Airlines will operate five daily flights from Changi to the Sydney market. This frequency was last seen in early 2025, when all services were operated via Kingsford Smith Airport. According to SIA's schedule filed with OAG, six daily flights have also occurred, but only on Saturdays in December 2016 and January 2017.

Looking at December. By flight volume, the top markets that month are Jakarta (279 flights, nine daily), Kuala Lumpur (240 flights, seven to eight daily), Bangkok (212 flights, six to seven daily), Phuket (186 flights, six daily), Bali (181 flights, five to six daily), and London (177 flights, three to six daily). Hong Kong, Manila, Melbourne, Penang, Sydney, and Tokyo all operate at five daily flights in that month; Sydney (SYD and WSI combined) is therefore Singapore Airlines' joint seventh-largest city served.

While flight volumes to Sydney are not record-breaking, available seats will reach a new high. In December, bookable round-trip seats for Sydney (SYD and WSI combined) total 112,344, 4% above the previous record set in July 2019. By capacity, Sydney will become Singapore Airlines' fourth-largest city served from Changi, behind only Jakarta, Bangkok, and London.

Expanding to all of Australia, planned round-trip seats in December also break records, reaching 416,720—4% more than the previous high in August 2026, an increase of 16,566 seats; up 10% compared to December 2025, an increase of 36,981 seats. Measured by December seat capacity, Australia is Singapore Airlines' largest country market, with Indonesia second at 290,572 round-trip seats.

Flight numbers to Australia also set a record in December, with 672 departures, equivalent to 21 to 22 daily; the previous peak was 641 flights in January 2025. That month, SIA operates eight Australian routes: Melbourne six daily (A350-900, A380, 777-300ER), Brisbane four daily (A350-900), Perth four daily (A350-900, 787-10), Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport four daily (A380, A350-900, 777-300ER), Adelaide 12 weekly (787-10), Cairns daily (737 MAX 8), Darwin daily (737 MAX 8), and Western Sydney daily (A350-900).
