Delta Air Lines cuts 81% of flights, grounding longest US domestic nonstop route in January 2027

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Delta Air Lines will discontinue its nonstop route between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Honolulu International Airport (HNL). By both longest scheduled block time (11 hours 10 minutes) and distance (4,427 nautical miles, 8,199 kilometers), this route ranks as the longest domestic nonstop in the United States. The carrier plans to operate just 16 flights before the route ends in early January 2027.

As a SkyTeam member, Delta had originally scheduled 84 BOS–HNL nonstop flights between December 19, 2026, and April 25, 2027, based on the airline's latest schedule filings to platforms such as OAG and Cirium Diio. Following the latest adjustment, flight numbers have been cut by 81%, with the first departure still set for December 19 from Massachusetts and the final flight moved up to January 3, 2027. This ultra-long-haul route will now operate entirely around Christmas holiday demand and will not return for the 2027/2028 winter season.

Delta will operate the route with the same 282-seat Airbus A330-300 originally planned. The aircraft features 34 Delta One seats (1-2-1 layout), 21 Premium Select seats (2-3-2 layout, 43-inch pitch), 24 Comfort+ seats (2-4-2 layout, 34-inch pitch), and 203 standard Main Cabin seats (2-4-2 layout, 32-inch pitch).

Delta previously operated the BOS–HNL route between November 2024 and April 2025. Hawaiian Airlines also served this route, with OAG data showing operations from April 2019 to November 2025, and the two carriers overlapped for a period. According to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) data, Delta carried a total of 43,436 round-trip passengers on this nonstop route, achieving a load factor of just 62.8% based on available seat miles, with its best month being January 2025 (68.9%). During Delta's operating period, Hawaiian Airlines carried 43,229 passengers with a load factor of 75.9%; compared to November 2023 through April 2024, passenger traffic fell 9%, and the load factor declined from 83.5%. After Hawaiian Airlines exited the market, BOS–HNL lost nonstop service, which may have been one of the reasons for Delta's return.

This route reduction decision comes as other carriers are also scaling back long-haul operations. United Airlines has indicated it will not fly between Newark and Peru during the summer and may discontinue the route entirely after the winter; Air Canada has halved its flights to Africa.

During the re-launched operating period from December 19, 2026, to January 3, 2027, BOS–HNL will be the second-longest A330-300 route in Delta's entire network by distance. The longest route by distance is the flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to Las Vegas on January 3 (and January 5), operated for the Consumer Electronics Show, which flies approximately 302 nautical miles (559 kilometers) farther than BOS–HNL by great-circle distance. In terms of longest scheduled block time, BOS–HNL also ranks second (11 hours 10 minutes), with the top spot held by the return flight from CDG to Delta's Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) hub, which has a scheduled block time of up to 11 hours 11 minutes—a difference of just one minute.
