US FAA Invests $481 Million to Improve Airport Facilities Across 36 States

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy unveiled the grant package, which includes $100 million for runway, taxiway, and terminal reconstruction at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, $32.5 million for terminal reconstruction at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, and $30.3 million for terminal construction at San Diego International Airport. Additionally, $14.2 million will go toward taxiway improvements at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, and $8.7 million will be used to rehabilitate the apron at El Paso International Airport. Projects covered by these grants include terminal upgrades, runway and taxiway repairs, baggage system updates, and other airport infrastructure improvements.

Riga Airport in Latvia has launched the next phase of its €98 million (approximately $114 million) passenger terminal expansion project, aimed at increasing capacity and upgrading facilities to support future growth. Construction will begin later this month, adding approximately 20,000 square meters (215,000 square feet) of terminal space, encompassing new check-in areas, security screening zones, baggage claim areas, and passenger waiting areas, while also redeveloping roadways, parking, and public spaces. The expansion is scheduled for completion within 42 months, financed by a loan package of up to €150 million provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Nordic Investment Bank, and OP Corporate Bank. Riga Airport stated that the project will introduce next-generation passenger processing and security screening technologies while alleviating the pressure of the existing terminal operating beyond its original design capacity.

London Heathrow Airport stated that its expansion, including a third runway, is expected to support more than 108,000 jobs across the United Kingdom. The privately funded project will create employment opportunities nationwide in construction, engineering, manufacturing, and apprenticeship training, while increasing airport capacity by 50%, enabling up to 756,000 annual flights and 150 million annual passengers. The announcement comes as the UK government's consultation period on the draft Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement concludes and parliamentary scrutiny begins.

Finnish airport operator Finavia has completed a €1.1 million (approximately $1.3 million) modernization of the airfield at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport, focusing on replacing the runway approach lighting system to enhance operational safety. The project included installing a new 900-meter (3,000-foot) approach lighting system equipped with 136 energy-efficient light fixtures; replacing approximately 12 kilometers (40,000 feet) of cabling; and repaving 24,300 square meters (262,000 square feet) of paved areas. The airport handled 66,505 passengers in the first half of 2026, up 3.6% year-on-year.

A new economic impact study released by Geneva Airport shows that its operations generated CHF 3.3 billion (approximately $4.1 billion) in added value in 2024 and supported nearly 21,930 full-time equivalent jobs. The study, conducted by independent consulting firm Infras, found that airport-related activities directly created CHF 1.66 billion in added value, accounting for 2.6% of Geneva's GDP. The study also revealed broader economic impacts beyond Geneva: generating more than CHF 550 million in added value in neighboring France and contributing approximately CHF 770 million in the rest of Switzerland. Geneva Airport stated that its connectivity supports commerce, tourism, and the city's role as an international hub for diplomacy, finance, and humanitarian affairs.
