Vattenfall Makes Final Investment Decision on 1GWh Energy Storage Project in Germany

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 10, Swedish utility Vattenfall announced its final investment decision on a large-scale battery energy storage project in Brunsbüttel, Germany. The project has a rated power of 254MW and an energy storage capacity of approximately 1000MWh. It will be built on the site of the former Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant, which is currently being decommissioned, making it Vattenfall's largest battery energy storage project to date.

The project will include the construction of a new substation and will be connected to the 380kV transmission network operated by 50Hertz. Under the current plan, the energy storage facility and grid connection works will be completed and put into operation by the end of 2028. Vattenfall has not yet disclosed the total project investment, the energy storage system supplier, or the EPC contractor.

At the end of 2025, the project was planned at 254MW/700MWh. In December 2025, the Brunsbüttel city council approved the project's relevant construction plan; Vattenfall's 2025 annual report showed that the company had already obtained key permits for the project and 350MW of grid connection capacity at that time. On June 17, 2026, the environmental authority of the state of Schleswig-Holstein issued a permit to Vattenfall Battery Brunsbüttel GmbH for the construction and operation of the substation and battery energy storage facility. At the time of this final investment decision announcement, the project's power capacity remains at 254MW, while the energy storage capacity has been increased from 700MWh to approximately 1000MWh.

Based on 254MW of power and approximately 1000MWh of capacity, the project corresponds to a storage duration of approximately 4 hours. Vattenfall's existing battery storage portfolio includes approximately 150MW of operational projects and 120MW of projects under construction; once the Brunsbüttel project is operational, the company's own battery storage power capacity will nearly double.

Vattenfall also plans to expand its third-party battery storage optimization and market trading business, aiming to manage and optimize a battery storage portfolio of up to 1500MW by 2029. German transmission system operators estimate that Germany's large-scale battery storage installed capacity will exceed 80GW by 2040.
