Caterpillar Launches Cat D11 XE Dozer with Up to 25% Lower Fuel Consumption per Ton

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 9, Caterpillar officially launched the Cat D11 XE large electric drive dozer. This is Caterpillar's first large dozer to adopt an electric drive system. Compared with the new generation Cat D11, the D11 XE reduces fuel consumption per unit of material moved by up to 25%, increases material handling capacity per hour by 5% to 10%, and increases power delivered to the ground by up to 10%.

The D11 XE combines a Cat C32B engine with an electric drive system. The engine drives a generator, and the electricity is transmitted through inverters to two drive motors, which then directly drive the left and right tracks. This architecture eliminates the bevel gears in the mechanical transmission system, and the electric drive system has 60% fewer moving parts than a mechanical transmission system. The net power to the ground is 642 kW (861 hp).

Operating indicators published by Caterpillar show that the D11 XE can reduce hourly fuel consumption by up to 20% and greenhouse gas emissions by 20% to 25% compared with the D11. In typical production dozing operations, the model reduces fuel consumption per unit of material moved by up to 25%; Caterpillar's product data for the D11 XE also show that material handling capacity in production dozing conditions can increase by up to 12%, and productivity in typical support operations can increase by about 5%.

The planned maintenance interval for the D11 XE's engine, final drive, and hydraulic system is increased from 15,000 hours on the D11 to 18,000 hours, and is aligned with the 18,000-hour overhaul interval of the electric drive system. The Cat C32B engine operates at a lower maximum idle speed, and its service life between overhauls is up to 20% longer than that of the D11. The electric drive generator and drive motors are designed to span two complete machine life cycles, with mainly bearing and seal replacement performed in between.

Lifecycle data published by Caterpillar also show that the D11 XE's powertrain lifecycle cost is expected to decrease by about 30%, and one overhaul can be eliminated over the machine's service life. The new model shares up to 85% of its parts with the D11 and adopts a modular structure, allowing major assemblies to be removed separately. The undercarriage uses a suspended structure that can reduce impact loads transmitted to the undercarriage by up to 50%.

The electric drive system eliminates the traditional shifting process. Each track is powered by an independent drive motor, enabling continuous power output to both tracks during steering. The machine is also equipped with electronic steering, ripper, and dozer control systems, and uses a multifunction touchscreen to display operating data and machine settings.

The D11 XE can be configured with AutoCarry automatic blade control, 3D Grade Control, Automated Blade Assist, and automatic ripper control. Among these, AutoCarry can automatically control the blade and adjust track slip during the dozing and carrying phase, increasing productivity by up to 15%; 3D Grade Control uses dual GNSS antennas mounted on the ROPS and a blade inertial measurement unit to determine the cutting edge position.

The model can also connect to the Cat MineStar mine digital system. Command for dozing supports different levels of remote control and semi-autonomous operation, while the Terrain system can provide production data such as bench height, cycle time, and cut-and-fill volumes, and is used for automated operation and blade control.

Caterpillar had previously deployed electric drive technology in medium dozer products and launched the D8 XE in March 2026. The D11 XE now extends the electric drive system to the D11 large mining dozer platform. Caterpillar positions the D11 XE for high-load material movement applications such as large open-pit mines.
