RWE and Masdar Plan to Invest Over €3 Billion in German Offshore Wind Auction
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 11, German energy group RWE and UAE renewable energy company Masdar signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly participate in future German offshore wind project auctions, with potential related investment exceeding €3 billion. Under the currently disclosed arrangement, the cooperation will focus on Germany's 2027 offshore wind tender, but the two parties have not yet disclosed the specific sites to be bid on, installed capacity, or equity ratios.

RWE and Masdar have previously established project cooperation in the European offshore wind sector. The two parties jointly invested in the UK's London Array offshore wind farm and are jointly advancing two offshore wind projects at Dogger Bank South in the UK, which have a planned total installed capacity of approximately 3 GW. Masdar currently has an energy project portfolio exceeding 15.6 GW in Europe, including Germany's 476 MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind project.
This offshore wind cooperation is one of a series of energy agreements signed by UAE companies in Germany on September 11. On the same day, RWE's subsidiary RWE Supply & Trading signed a letter of intent with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to continue advancing up to two long-term liquefied natural gas sales and purchase agreements, with plans to supply LNG to Germany, other European markets, and Asia starting in the early 2030s. The supply resources will come from ADNOC Gas and XRG's global LNG project portfolio, including resources related to Ruwais, Das, Rio Grande, Mozambique, and Argentina.
This LNG arrangement builds further on the two parties' February 2026 strategic cooperation agreement. At that time, ADNOC and RWE agreed to study LNG supply cooperation of up to 1 million tonnes per year for a maximum of 10 years, and simultaneously study LNG trading, regasification capacity in Germany and Europe, and other cooperation opportunities across the natural gas and LNG value chain. This letter of intent further specifies the cooperation as up to two long-term LNG sales and purchase agreements, but the two parties have not yet announced the supply volume per contract, contract duration, or pricing mechanism.
The UAE and Germany also expanded cooperation on other energy projects on this occasion. Masdar signed a memorandum of understanding with German energy infrastructure investment institution Luxcara to study joint investment in offshore wind and battery energy storage projects in Germany and other European markets, with potential investment exceeding €5 billion; ADNOC, XRG, and German state-owned energy company SEFE signed a memorandum of understanding to study cooperation in natural gas supply, infrastructure, logistics, and LNG portfolio optimization.
During the signing of the above agreements, the UAE announced plans to make €40 billion in long-term investment in Germany. ADNOC, XRG, and Masdar have cumulatively invested more than €20 billion in Germany's energy and industrial sectors, including XRG's approximately €14 billion acquisition of Covestro and Masdar's investment in the Baltic Eagle offshore wind project.
