IVECO and Toyota Jointly Develop a 300 kW Hydrogen Fuel Cell Heavy Truck

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 10, IVECO and Toyota announced a collaboration under the framework of the EMPOWER project funded by the EU's Horizon Europe program to jointly develop a new generation of heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell trucks. Under the division of responsibilities, Toyota will supply the fuel cell system, while IVECO will handle vehicle development, system integration, and validation. The project will test vehicle performance through real-world customer operating scenarios.

The new-generation IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell will be equipped with Toyota's fuel cell system, achieving a total power output of 300 kW, a range of over 900 kilometers, and a target fuel cell system operating life of more than 25,000 hours. Compared with the first-generation fuel cell heavy truck that IVECO previously deployed in the H2Haul project, the new model will also reduce vehicle weight and, by adjusting the energy management architecture, cut the power battery capacity to half that of the previous generation.

IVECO will be responsible for overall vehicle engineering development and the integration of the fuel cell system with the vehicle powertrain architecture, while Toyota will provide its latest-generation fuel cell technology for commercial vehicles. The project's development focus includes improving system power, energy efficiency, and durability, and validating them under long-haul heavy-load transport conditions.

Vehicle validation and testing are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with road testing starting in the first half of 2027. The tests will cover real-world heavy-load transport conditions, and the subsequent validation results will be used to assess the conditions for commercialization and large-scale application of this technology in long-haul freight scenarios.

In addition to the fuel cell heavy truck, IVECO will also deploy a battery-electric heavy truck demonstration vehicle in the EMPOWER project. The two types of vehicles will be used respectively to validate the operational performance of hydrogen fuel cell and battery-electric technologies in heavy-duty transport.
