Wedoany.com Report-Jun 23, Miami-based UGT Renewables has agreed to build a 3 GW solar park in Iraq, following a deal signed with the Iraqi government in May 2025. The company held discussions with Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel and British Ambassador Irfan Siddiq to advance the project and foster cooperation in solar energy development.
The minister stated: “The meeting focused on implementing the agreement and strengthening cooperation in solar energy projects.”
The project will feature up to 500 MWh of energy storage and 1,000 km of HVDC transmission lines, alongside a two-year program for technology transfer, training, and maintenance to enhance local expertise. Specific timelines and site details are yet to be confirmed.
Financed by the Export-Import Bank of the United States and UK Export Finance, with J.P. Morgan as lead bank, the project aligns with Iraq’s renewable energy goals. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reported Iraq’s solar capacity at 42 MW by the end of 2024, with a target of 12 GW by 2030. Iraq’s first solar-powered village began operating in May 2025.
This solar park is a key step toward expanding Iraq’s renewable energy capacity and achieving its 2030 solar objectives.
