Chinese company begins construction of photovoltaic manufacturing plant in Mozambique, with first-phase investment exceeding USD 10 million

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Chinese company Lumira Moz Energy has officially commenced construction of a solar manufacturing plant in the Beluluane Industrial Park in Maputo Province, Mozambique. The project covers approximately 1.6 hectares and is planned to be implemented in two phases, with the first phase involving an investment of more than USD 10 million to build an integrated production facility covering photovoltaic cell production, precision silicon wafer cutting, and high-efficiency solar module manufacturing. The project is not a single module assembly line, but rather extends upstream along the photovoltaic manufacturing industry chain, forming a coordinated layout of cell production, silicon wafer processing, and module manufacturing.

Mozambican Minister of Economy Basílio Muhate attended the groundbreaking ceremony. The Mozambican side has incorporated the project into its economic diversification and energy equipment manufacturing capacity-building efforts, hoping to reduce dependence on imported finished equipment by developing local photovoltaic manufacturing and to promote the local development of professional skills, manufacturing employment, and the clean energy industry chain. The Lumira Moz Energy project is also a significant new addition to the new energy manufacturing segment of the Beluluane Industrial Park.

The Beluluane Industrial Park, where the project is located, is situated in Maputo Province and is one of Mozambique's larger integrated industrial clusters. The park covers approximately 700 hectares, has attracted more than 70 companies from 18 countries, with cumulative investment exceeding USD 4 billion, and provides more than 10,000 direct jobs. The park is connected to the N4 regional transport corridor, providing access to the Port of Maputo, the Port of Matola, and the markets of South Africa and Eswatini, offering logistical conditions for the import of raw materials needed for photovoltaic production, equipment transportation, and regional export of products.

The park operator MozParks also undertakes administrative coordination and facilitation services for the project. Before the launch of the Lumira Moz Energy project, MozParks worked in coordination with the Matola-Rio municipal government to advance approval and administrative documentation processing, with the procedures required for project launch completed within 48 hours. The existing industrial infrastructure, power supply, and port and cross-border logistics conditions of the Beluluane Industrial Park provide a foundation for the project's subsequent equipment installation, raw material supply, and large-scale production.

From the manufacturing perspective, the project's core equipment needs will focus on precision silicon wafer cutting equipment, photovoltaic cell production equipment, automated module production lines, electrical systems, cleanroom and environmental control systems, as well as plant supporting utilities. The first-phase investment of the project has already entered the construction stage, but the specific annual production capacity has not yet been disclosed. As the second phase continues to advance, the Beluluane Industrial Park will add photovoltaic manufacturing as a new industrial category and further connect Mozambique's local new energy market with the Southern African regional market.
