Sri Lanka Moragolla Housing Project Launches Phase II Construction of 30 Housing Units

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 16, the Moragolla Housing Project in Sri Lanka launched its second phase of construction. The project is located within the jurisdiction of the Hali Ela Divisional Secretariat in the Badulla District and is primarily intended to resettle 54 families who lost their homes due to landslides in the Moragolla plantation area. This second phase of construction covers the remaining 30 housing units.

The project was initially launched in 2011 but remained incomplete for a long time. By 2025, none of the 54 originally planned housing units had been completed and officially handed over, with some houses having only completed foundation work or the early stages of structural construction. In October 2025, the Sri Lankan government restarted the housing project through the "Malayaga Mahilchichi" program.

The first phase of construction after resumption covered 24 housing units and is now nearing completion, with each housing unit costing approximately 3.2 million Sri Lankan rupees. The second phase will involve the reconstruction and continuation of the remaining 30 damaged or unfinished housing units, some of which had previously developed wall cracks and foundation damage.

This round of work includes not only the main construction of the housing units but also the coordinated installation of internal roads, retaining walls, and drainage facilities. The Sri Lanka Army Corps of Engineer Services will directly participate in the construction labor, and the project will be supervised and implemented by the Badulla District Secretariat and the Hali Ela Divisional Secretariat.

The project area is now connected to electricity, and a new water supply project is planned with a budget of approximately 9.9 million Sri Lankan rupees to address the long-term drinking water supply problem in the resettlement area. The housing units, roads, retaining walls, drainage, and water supply facilities will constitute the complete scope of construction following this resumption.
