en.Wedoany.com Reported - The New South Wales government of Australia has approved the development application for the Deniliquin East battery energy storage project. The project is located approximately 7 kilometers southeast of Deniliquin in southern New South Wales, filed by BESS Arctic Pty Ltd and developed by Gransolar Development Australia. It plans to build a 100MW/200MWh battery energy storage facility, with an estimated investment of approximately AUD 118 million, and construction is scheduled to commence in 2027.

The project will be equipped with approximately 80 containerized lithium-ion battery modules, with a nominal energy storage capacity of 100MW/200MWh and a total cell configuration capacity of approximately 120MW/240MWh. Supporting facilities include a power conversion system, a 33/132kV booster station, a switch room, a control room, maintenance facilities, as well as on-site roads and security systems. The energy storage station will be connected to the existing Deniliquin substation via a newly built 132kV overhead line.

According to documents from the New South Wales planning department, the project is expected to create approximately 52 jobs during the construction period and approximately 2 long-term positions after commissioning. The developer has also proposed providing approximately AUD 600,000 in community benefits to the local community. The project's energy storage system will primarily charge during periods of low electricity demand or high renewable energy output, and discharge to the grid during peak load periods, providing peak shaving and flexibility support to the local grid.

The Deniliquin East project received 71 objections during the approval process, with concerns including battery fire risk, land use, and project siting. After completing the project assessment, the New South Wales government determined that the project has comprehensive benefits in terms of energy supply, economy, and employment, and approved its development application. The project covers an area of approximately 3.53 hectares and is expected to operate until around 2060 after construction is completed.
