US Rivian Acquires UK Autonomous Driving Simulation Company
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 22, US electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian announced the acquisition of UK artificial intelligence startup Third Dimension AI, incorporating its 3D spatial generation and simulation platform into its in-house autonomous driving R&D system. The acquisition focuses on the development of advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving technology, reconstructing 3D driving scenarios from real road data, expanding the scale of synthetic training data, and accelerating algorithm training and validation in complex traffic environments.

Third Dimension AI was founded in 2024 by Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokolski. Its simulation platform can convert real images, videos, and road environment data into high-fidelity, controllable 3D scenes. Developers can adjust the positions of vehicles and other traffic participants, as well as conditions such as lighting and weather, in the reconstructed environments to generate driving scenarios in different combinations for autonomous driving model training and performance testing.
Rivian plans to integrate the platform with its existing vehicle data collection system. The company currently obtains road driving data from in-service vehicles with user authorization, receiving more than 400,000 driving data sequences per day. By converting these real-world scenarios into repeatable virtual test environments, the R&D team can generate different test conditions for rare traffic situations and use simulation results for autonomous driving software validation.
Under the acquisition arrangement, Third Dimension AI's approximately 15-person team will join Rivian's autonomous driving and artificial intelligence R&D department, led by Senior Vice President James Philbin. Most team members are based in the UK, and the acquisition also involves the expansion of Rivian's artificial intelligence R&D team in London. Third Dimension AI previously completed a $7 million seed round, and its simulation technology was initially aimed at game development before expanding into applications such as autonomous driving.
Rivian also plans to apply the related technology to the development of autonomous driving systems for passenger vehicles and robotaxis. According to its existing product roadmap, the company plans to launch by the end of 2026 a hands-free driving feature capable of continuous operation on urban roads and highways but still requiring driver supervision, and plans to deploy robotaxis based on the R2 model through the Uber platform in 2028.
