Fortera's 300,000-ton low-carbon cement plant in the U.S. lands in Missouri
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 22, U.S. low-carbon building materials company Fortera and lime producer Mississippi Lime Company (MLC) announced that Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, has been formally selected as the construction site for the first commercial-scale carbon dioxide-to-cement plant. The project will leverage MLC's existing lime production base and is planned to produce 300,000 tons of ReAct low-carbon cement per year, using carbon dioxide generated during lime production as a raw material. The two parties signed a project development agreement in September, and this announcement further confirms the specific plant site and raw material supply base.

The new plant plans to adopt Fortera's proprietary ReCarb technology, which captures carbon dioxide generated during limestone calcination and converts it into cementitious materials with binding properties. According to the technical plan published by the company, nearly 50% of the weight of ReAct products comes from captured carbon dioxide, and the production process can utilize the kilns, limestone raw materials and related infrastructure of existing lime plants. Fortera claims that the low-carbon cement produced with this technology can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 70% compared with conventional cement manufacturing processes.
The Sainte Genevieve production base is located along the Mississippi River and is one of MLC's existing large-scale lime production bases. The project will use local industrial facilities and waterway transportation conditions to supply low-carbon cement to the building materials market in the U.S. Midwest. Concrete and building materials company Ozinga has been included in the project's target customer scope and plans to apply the relevant cement products in its regional concrete production operations.
Fortera currently operates a 15,000-ton-per-year low-carbon cement demonstration plant in Redding, California. The planned capacity of the new Missouri project is 20 times that of the existing facility, which will advance the ReCarb technology from demonstration production to commercial-scale manufacturing. According to the arrangements announced by the company at this stage, the two parties will continue to advance project development and construction preparation work.
