en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 2, the BMW Group of Germany announced the latest validation progress of its urban road L2 driving assistance system. In accordance with the requirements of UNECE Regulation No. 171 (UNECE R171) DCAS Series 2, real-road testing was completed by an independent third-party technical service organization. The system has met the relevant technical approval conditions and is planned to obtain final confirmation from regulatory authorities in early 2027, with the urban road navigation-guided assisted driving function expected to be launched first in the German market in the same year.

The new system integrates BMW Maps navigation with Symbiotic Drive human-vehicle cooperative driving technology. After destination navigation is activated, it can assist the driver in completing urban intersection turns, lane changes, right-of-way judgments, and roundabout passage. BMW's existing City Assistant already supports automatic stopping and starting at traffic lights in the German market. The new function will further expand the scope of urban road assisted driving and connect with highway and rural road assisted driving functions.

BMW has equipped the required technical hardware as standard on all model variants of the new iX3 and iX4, as well as the X5, 3 Series, and 7 Series. After the system is officially launched, relevant vehicles can install the required software via over-the-air (OTA) updates and activate the applicable driving assistance functions after purchase. BMW plans to gradually expand to other countries thereafter, but specific rollout dates and the scope of function availability in each market have not yet been determined.

Symbiotic Drive allows the driver to actively accelerate, steer, and brake while the system is operating. The system identifies driving intent through steering wheel operation and the driver's gaze direction, and issues warnings and performs necessary steering interventions when it determines that the vehicle has unintentionally deviated from the lane or that a collision risk exists. These functions remain SAE L2 assisted driving, and the driver must continuously observe road traffic and be ready to take over the vehicle at any time.

BMW has also integrated the new functions into the Panoramic iDrive interaction system. BMW Panoramic Vision can display the assisted driving status and upcoming operations within the driver's field of view, while the BMW Maps assisted driving navigation view on the central display integrates the navigation route, the vehicle's surrounding environment, and assisted driving information into a three-dimensional image, displaying the next navigation maneuver, the road environment perceived by the vehicle, and the currently active assistance functions.

BMW has filed multiple patent applications related to the new urban road assisted driving functions. Following the completion of this third-party road testing, final regulatory confirmation is still pending until early 2027. The official commercial launch date, function pricing, and rollout arrangements for other countries have not yet been determined.
