Italy's CANNON Artes Wins Water Treatment System Contract for 3 GW Gas-Fired Power Plant in Saudi Arabia

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 2, Italian industrial water treatment equipment supplier CANNON Artes was awarded the water treatment system contract for the Shuqaiq combined cycle gas-fired power plant in Saudi Arabia, and will be responsible for the process design, detailed engineering design, and equipment supply of the project's water treatment facilities. The project is located on the Red Sea coast in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia, with a planned installed capacity of 3 GW. The ultimate owner is the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), and the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) work is undertaken by a consortium composed of Egypt's Orascom Construction and Spain's Técnicas Reunidas.

The scope of supply covers the engineering design, equipment procurement, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and delivery of the water treatment system. The system adopts advanced membrane treatment technology, integrating seawater desalination, water purification, and advanced polishing processes to provide treated water according to the water quality requirements of different operating stages of the power plant. For combined cycle gas-fired power plants, water treatment facilities need to meet the water requirements for steam generation, auxiliary systems, and other production processes, and the quality of treated water directly affects equipment operation and system reliability.

This order continues the cooperation between CANNON Artes, Orascom Construction, and Técnicas Reunidas on Saudi power projects. In November 2025, CANNON Artes was awarded the seawater desalination facility contract for the Hajr Expansion combined cycle gas-fired power plant in Saudi Arabia. That project also has an installed capacity of 3 GW, and the EPC contractor is also the consortium formed by the above two companies. CANNON Artes was responsible for designing and supplying a seawater desalination system with a daily production capacity of 34,000 cubic meters, used to treat high-salinity seawater and produce demineralized water required for steam generation, domestic water for the power plant, and service water for auxiliary systems.

The Hajr project adopts a combined process of ultrafiltration (UF), reverse osmosis (RO), and electrodeionization (EDI), in which the effective membrane area of both the ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis systems is close to 22,000 square meters. Subsequent deep demineralization is carried out through EDI, and a calcite filter is configured to supplement calcium and alkalinity, so as to improve the stability of treated water and reduce the risk of corrosion. For the Shuqaiq project, the same EPC consortium once again selected CANNON Artes to provide the water treatment system, continuing the cooperation between the two parties in supporting water treatment facilities for large gas-fired power plants.
