Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 7, The Philippines will implement a temporary ban on rice imports starting September 1, lasting 60 days, to support local farmers during the harvest season. The measure aims to prioritize domestic rice production and ensure stability for local producers.

In 2024, the Philippines imported a record 4.8 million tonnes of rice, primarily from Vietnam and Thailand. This significant import volume reflects the country's reliance on external sources to meet demand. However, the government’s decision to pause imports seeks to bolster local agricultural efforts during a critical period.

Agricultural output in the second quarter of 2025 rose by 5.7% compared to the previous year, reaching 437.53 million pesos ($7.6 million). Rice production saw a notable increase of 13.9%, highlighting the sector's growth and potential to meet domestic needs. This uptick in production aligns with efforts to strengthen local agriculture.

When asked about potential changes to rice import tariffs, the Philippine presidential communications secretary stated: “not the time to discuss the issue,” according to the state news agency PNA. This response underscores the government’s focus on the import ban as the primary measure for now.

The decline in rice prices has contributed to a significant reduction in inflation, reaching a nearly six-year low of 0.9% in July. This follows the Philippine authorities’ declaration of a state of emergency on food security. Lower rice prices have helped stabilize the economy, benefiting consumers and supporting broader economic goals.

The temporary import ban reflects a strategic effort to balance domestic production with consumer needs while fostering agricultural growth. By prioritizing local farmers during the harvest season, the Philippines aims to enhance food security and sustain economic progress.
