Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 25, GRK has secured a major infrastructure contract for the Port of Umeå, valued at approximately SEK 159 million (around EUR 14 million), to build a new energy pier as part of the port’s ongoing renewal and expansion. The agreement with Umeå Hamn AB was signed on 10 October 2025, with the project added to GRK’s order book. Construction is set to begin in autumn 2025 and continue until August 2027.

The project will start with the construction of a connecting road to the new quay area and dredging operations. In early 2026, a 45-metre-long quay with pile mooring and a 150-metre-long pier will be built. The pier will consist of a piled concrete deck, and the contract also includes extensive process engineering work.

Carl Andersson, CEO of GRK Sverige AB, commented: “We are very pleased that our order book in Sweden is growing with this significant port project. We are also about to start another port project in Luleå, worth approximately EUR 25-30 million, where we are responsible for, among other things, the implementation of the loading dock and the construction of roads in the port area.”

Both Umeå and Luleå port projects are part of GRK’s broader operations in northern Sweden, where numerous initiatives are linked to the green transition. The northern ports play a key role in logistical shipping lanes for freight, supporting regional trade and transport.

“At the moment, several construction and development projects are under way in the Port of Umeå to meet the needs of business by increasing capacity in northern Sweden. We have seen that the green transition projects are also reflected in improving the connections in northern Sweden: new capacity is needed for tracks, roads and ports,” Andersson added.

The Port of Umeå is one of the largest ports in the northern Nordic region, located at the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia. It handles both freight and passenger traffic. Umeå Hamn AB, a municipal company, owns and manages the port’s infrastructure, including quays, railway tracks, and cranes, while its subsidiary, Kvarken Ports, oversees port operations.

The new energy pier project is part of a wider effort to increase port capacity and modernize infrastructure in northern Sweden, aligning with regional economic development and the ongoing green transition. GRK’s involvement in these projects highlights the company’s role in expanding and upgrading strategic port facilities to support both freight and sustainable energy logistics.

By completing the energy pier and associated works, the Port of Umeå will enhance operational efficiency, accommodate larger vessels, and strengthen its position as a key logistics hub in the northern Nordics. GRK’s continued participation in regional port development underscores its commitment to sustainable infrastructure and the growing demand for modernized shipping and transport facilities.
