Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 25, On October 23, 2025, China launched its largest all-electric bulk carrier, named Gezhouba, in Yichang, Hubei Province, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s sustainable and smart shipping industry. The vessel, measuring nearly 130 meters in length with a maximum load capacity exceeding 13,000 tonnes, represents a leap forward in green maritime technology.
The Gezhouba is powered by 12 lithium battery units, providing a total energy capacity of 24,000 kWh. Its developer highlighted the ship’s capability for quick battery swapping, enabling efficient operations and a range of up to 500 kilometers on a single charge. This design supports extended voyages while prioritizing energy efficiency and environmental benefits.
Equipped with an advanced intelligent control system, the carrier features capabilities such as remote navigation and automatic berthing. These functions are supported by integrated multi-link communication networks, enhancing operational precision and safety. The incorporation of such technologies positions the Gezhouba as a model for smart shipping solutions.
“This project goes beyond single-product innovation,” said Yan Xinping, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering. “It successfully validates core technologies like large-capacity batteries and distributed DC power systems.”
The vessel is projected to deliver substantial environmental benefits, saving approximately 617 tonnes of fuel each year and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2,052 tonnes annually. These reductions contribute to China’s broader goals of promoting sustainable transport and minimizing the environmental impact of its maritime sector.
The Gezhouba’s development underscores China’s commitment to advancing green technology in shipping. By leveraging high-capacity batteries and intelligent systems, the vessel sets a benchmark for eco-friendly maritime operations. Its ability to handle significant cargo loads while maintaining zero-emission performance supports both domestic logistics and international trade demands.
The launch in Yichang highlights Hubei Province’s growing role as a hub for innovative manufacturing and sustainable infrastructure. The project’s success reflects collaborative efforts to integrate cutting-edge engineering with environmental priorities, fostering economic growth while addressing global sustainability challenges.
As the shipping industry evolves, the Gezhouba serves as a pioneering example of how advanced technology can transform traditional sectors. Its battery-powered propulsion and smart navigation systems pave the way for future vessels to adopt similar innovations, enhancing efficiency and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The carrier’s impact extends beyond cargo transport, supporting job creation and technological expertise in the region.
This milestone reinforces China’s leadership in developing intelligent and green shipping solutions. The Gezhouba’s capabilities align with global trends toward cleaner energy in transportation, ensuring that the maritime sector contributes to a sustainable future while meeting the demands of modern commerce.
