Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 5, The 22-hectare Barangaroo South development in Sydney, located on a former container port on the city’s north-western harbour, has been completed, marking a major milestone in urban regeneration. Envisioned as an extension of Sydney’s central business district, Barangaroo South covers a 6-hectare built area centred around International Towers Sydney, a trio of office buildings arranged in a fan-shaped grid designed by Renzo Piano.

The development dedicates two-thirds of its area to public and recreational spaces, including a continuous waterfront promenade, an amphitheatre-style boardwalk leading to the water’s edge, and the one-hectare Hickson Park. To enhance accessibility, new public transport connections and pedestrian links have been established, improving integration with the wider Sydney area.

Lendlease, the project’s main developer, describes Barangaroo South as “Australia’s first mixed-use carbon-neutral development.” The site incorporates sustainable technologies, such as a district cooling plant, harbour water heat rejection system, recycled water treatment facility, onsite solar panels, and an embedded electricity network, collectively designed to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.

The broader Barangaroo project, led by English architecture firm RSHP and Lendlease, consists of three key precincts. The first, Barangaroo Reserve, is a 15-hectare public park completed in 2015, providing landscaped green space on Sydney’s waterfront. The second, Barangaroo Central, is a low-density residential neighbourhood extending north to south, which received planning approval earlier this year and is expected to be completed by 2030. Together, these precincts form a cohesive urban environment combining commercial, residential, and public functions.

Avtar Lotay, Managing Director of RSHP, said: “Barangaroo is more than a masterplan — it’s a living part of the city that continues to evolve around the people who use it every day. It has become a destination, an extension of the city on the water’s edge.” He added: “As a practice based here in one of the International Towers, we experience daily the first-hand vibrancy and connection this place brings to Sydney’s western waterfront. Barangaroo demonstrates what can be achieved when design prioritises public space, sustainability, and a sense of belonging — principles that continue to shape our work in Australia and beyond.”

The completion of Barangaroo South signifies a major advancement in sustainable urban development in Sydney. It transforms a once-industrial port into a vibrant waterfront community integrating business, leisure, and environmental innovation. With its emphasis on carbon neutrality, green infrastructure, and public engagement, the project reflects Sydney’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable growth and enhance urban livability while creating a globally recognised landmark on the city’s harbour.
