Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 26, DB InfraGO, Germany's railway infrastructure operator, has awarded STRABAG several major contracts for construction of the Fehmarn Sound Crossing, a new immersed tunnel that will connect the island of Fehmarn to the German mainland.
The tunnel will measure about 2.2km in length.
The 2.2 km tunnel will replace the existing Fehmarn Sound Bridge and provide higher transport capacity with four road lanes in two tubes and two electrified railway tracks in separate tubes. It forms an essential part of the broader Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link and the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor linking northern and southern Europe.
Project oversight is shared between DB InfraGO and DEGES. STRABAG, working through various consortia that include Johann Bunte, ZÜBLIN, Eiffage Infra-Bau, PORR, and Implenia, will execute key packages covering earthworks, civil engineering, superstructure, ground engineering, and cut-and-cover tunnel sections.
"The Fehmarn Sound Crossing is a high-capacity link whose significance extends far beyond the region itself. This project is an important step in the continuous development of Europe's infrastructure and a clear commitment to modern mobility," said Jörg Rösler, member of the STRABAG management board.
"With this contract, we are underscoring our leading role in the German infrastructure market. With around 40,000 employees in Germany, we have a strong local presence and are ideally positioned to play a leading role in shaping the country’s infrastructure modernisation drive."
The new crossing will substantially improve road and rail connections between Germany and Denmark, supporting smoother freight and passenger flows along one of Europe's principal north-south transport axes.
STRABAG's involvement leverages its extensive experience in large-scale infrastructure projects and its established supply network for construction materials across Germany. The company continues to participate in multiple high-profile developments, including recent awards for energy-related infrastructure elsewhere in the country.
