Wedoany.com Report-Dec.3, Cloud infrastructure provider Vultr announced on Tuesday a planned investment exceeding $1 billion to establish a large-scale artificial intelligence computing cluster in Springfield, Ohio, powered exclusively by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) processors.

The new facility will be a 50-megawatt data center housing 24,000 AMD Instinct MI355X graphics processing units. These accelerators will be connected through a high-speed ethernet fabric designed to optimize data movement and overall system performance.

Vultr positions itself as a lower-cost alternative to major cloud providers, typically offering comparable computing resources at approximately half the price of leading hyperscale platforms.

The Ohio cluster is scheduled to become operational in early 2026. "We expect the cluster to be sold before it goes live. We also have MI355X GPUs racked in our Chicago region for customer testing and pilots," Vultr CEO J.J. Kardwell stated in an interview.

Although specific customers for the Springfield site have not yet been confirmed, the company is engaged in advanced discussions with multiple enterprises. Current Vultr users of AMD-based AI infrastructure include Chai and LiquidMetal AI, among others.

The project builds on Vultr's recent growth trajectory. In December 2024, the company achieved a $3.5 billion valuation through a funding round led by LuminArx Capital Management and AMD Ventures.

Headquartered in West Palm Beach, Florida, Vultr has operated cloud services since 2014. After adding graphics processing units to its offerings in 2021, revenue from AI-related infrastructure has grown to represent the majority of the company's total income over the past two years.

Vultr sources processors from manufacturers including AMD and Nvidia and operates them in leased data center space worldwide.

Financing for the Ohio expansion comes from an expanded credit facility arranged with a banking syndicate that includes Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Wells Fargo.

Once completed, the Springfield cluster will significantly increase Vultr's capacity to serve the rising demand for affordable, high-performance AI training and inference resources, particularly among startups, research institutions, and enterprises seeking cost-efficient alternatives to the largest cloud providers.
