Wedoany.com Report-Dec.13, WestJet Airlines announced on December 12, 2025, a temporary halt to the installation of non-adjustable economy seats, starting after December 15, in response to feedback regarding additional charges for seats with adjustable recline features.
The Calgary-based carrier began operating reconfigured Boeing 737 aircraft in October, where basic economy seats feature a fixed position. Passengers can select adjustable options for an extra fee. This approach drew comments from certain travelers, as well as pilots and flight attendants, who raised concerns about potential impacts on crew well-being and operational aspects.
The company explained that suspending the reconfiguration process would ensure sufficient aircraft availability for the busy winter travel period. By the following Monday, roughly half of its single-class economy fleet would have the updated layout.
"We will also be monitoring guest feedback and assessing the operational performance of the reconfigured aircraft to learn more about how this product is performing in the market," Calgary-based WestJet said.
The airline indicated plans to restart the process in the spring season.
In October, WestJet noted that during testing, half of the participants favored the fixed-position design, citing reduced interference from seats ahead.
Crew members have expressed views on seat suitability for their own travel needs during off-duty commutes.
"While WestJet has stated that (the) rollout is paused at approximately 20 aircraft, they have also indicated that the broader fleet is planned for this reconfiguration," the union said in a memo to staff from late November seen by Reuters.
"The union will continue to press the operational, safety, and working condition impacts of this decision and advocate for a thorough re-evaluation."
