Wedoany.com Report on Feb 2nd, Germany and Denmark have signed a bilateral cooperation agreement at the North Sea Summit to jointly invest in the Bornholm Energy Island project. This marks the first time the two countries have provided joint funding for an offshore wind power project, signaling a new phase in cross-border energy cooperation.

According to the agreement, Germany and Denmark will share the relevant construction and operational costs based on the electricity flow delivered to both countries and the project's shared interests. The project is expected to add 3 gigawatts of offshore wind power capacity, providing clean electricity to approximately 3 million households.

The project will be implemented by the German transmission system operator 50Hertz and Denmark's Energinet. By connecting the power grids of both countries, it will enhance regional energy interconnectivity. German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Katharina Reich, stated: "Such cross-border projects help reduce critical dependencies, strengthen strategic autonomy, and enhance resilience against external pressures." Her Danish counterpart, Lars Aagaard, noted: "The Bornholm Energy Island demonstrates European solidarity and determination, turning a shared vision into concrete action that brings tangible benefits to the people and businesses of both countries and Europe."

The Bornholm Energy Island has been listed by the European Commission as one of eight priority "Energy Highway" projects and will utilize the world's first multi-terminal high-voltage direct current hybrid connection technology. The EU has provided €645 million in funding for this project through the Connecting Europe Facility.
