UK-based Carbon Neutral Fuels (CNF) has selected Johnson Matthey (JM) and bp's FT CANS technology, along with Honeywell UOP's Fischer-Tropsch Unicracking process, for its power-to-liquid facility in Workington. Named the "Project Starling," the initiative aims to convert captured carbon dioxide and water into synthetic kerosene (FT-SPK) for blending with conventional aviation fuel, with an expected annual production of approximately 25,000 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Construction is planned to commence in 2028, targeting operational status by 2031. This move represents a significant advancement in the UK's e-fuels sector, marking the first exploration of using wastewater as a feedstock for SAF production. Johnson Matthey and bp's FT CANS technology will convert captured CO₂ syngas into synthetic crude oil, which is then refined into kerosene suitable for SAF blending through Honeywell's FT Unicracking process, supporting efficient and scalable SAF production.

Sophie Zienkiewicz, co-founder of Carbon Neutral Fuels, stated: "Project Starling is at the heart of CNF's mission to demonstrate that large-scale decarbonisation of the aviation industry is both technically and economically viable." She added: "By collaborating with technology partners like Honeywell and Johnson Matthey, we are building a facility that can reduce lifecycle emissions by over 95%, while also supporting the UK's development in the sustainable e-fuels space."

Alberto Giovanzana, Managing Director of Licensing at Johnson Matthey, said: "Deploying FT CANS technology in Project Starling demonstrates how advanced process and catalyst solutions can drive progress in next-generation sustainable aviation fuels." He noted: "The collaboration with Carbon Neutral Fuels and Honeywell highlights the role of value chain partnerships in accelerating the transition to low-carbon aviation."

With global SAF demand projected to grow from 344 million gallons to 7.6 billion gallons over the next decade, CNF is engaging with airlines, fuel suppliers, and strategic partners to secure long-term offtake agreements and joint development plans. Rajesh Gattupalli, President of Honeywell UOP, stated: "Honeywell's FT Unicracking technology offers flexibility, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in upgrading synthetic feedstocks into high-quality transportation fuels. We are pleased to support Carbon Neutral Fuels in advancing Project Starling and contributing to the expansion of sustainable aviation fuel production."
