Wedoany.com Report on Feb 24th, A major transportation project in Kansas, the US 69 Express Lanes Project, has been officially completed. With a total investment of $572 million, the project primarily widened a 10-kilometer section between 103rd Street and 151st Street in Overland Park, southwest of Kansas City. Following the upgrade, the number of lanes in each direction increased from the original two to three. The newly added lanes are express (toll) lanes, while the remaining lanes continue to be free, aiming to alleviate congestion and improve travel efficiency.
The express lanes design focuses on maintaining smooth traffic flow, providing more reliable travel options during peak hours, while also enhancing road safety. The project also included upgrades to interchanges and reconstruction of portions of the highway to handle daily traffic volumes exceeding 80,000 vehicles, ensuring more durable infrastructure.
Each express lane is separated from the general-purpose lanes by a buffer zone and wide double white lines, while northbound and southbound traffic are divided by concrete barriers. The vehicle identification system uses compatible transponders (such as KTAG) or license plate image technology. Customers using KTAG pay the rate displayed on overhead signs, while those without KTAG are charged a higher fee, which helps manage traffic and optimize the tolling process.
The US 69 expansion project began in 2020, based on years of research, with the goal of optimizing this busy four-lane highway. The Kansas Department of Transportation was responsible for implementing the project. Through improvements like the express lanes, it is expected to significantly enhance the service level of the regional transportation network.
