Wedoany.com Report on Mar 4th, The city of Providence, Rhode Island, USA, has recently completed a major infrastructure project—the new $265 million Interstate 95 Providence Northbound Viaduct is now officially open. This bridge replaces the previous structurally deficient one, aiming to improve traffic efficiency and safety.

The newly constructed viaduct spans approximately 1,300 feet, replacing the old bridge built in 1964. The old bridge was rated as requiring a full replacement due to structural issues. It handled up to 220,000 vehicles daily, making it one of the busiest sections of I-95 in Rhode Island and a high-traffic highway bridge on the East Coast. The project also included the repair and replacement of 10 other bridges, the construction of a new service road on the right side of I-95, and the addition of an express lane on the northbound lanes.

Other improvements from the project involved the construction of new retaining walls along I-95 and Park Street, as well as the reconstruction of the Atwells Avenue, Route 6/10 connector, and Memorial Boulevard entrance ramps to I-95 northbound. The service road partially opened in January 2024 and became fully operational in June 2025. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation stated that these modifications have significantly alleviated congestion, reduced travel times, and resolved traffic weaving issues from the 6/10 connector and Atwells Avenue to the Route 146/State Offices Interchange.

The design-build contract for the project was awarded to the Skanska/Manafot joint venture, whose proposal helped save approximately one year of construction time. Regarding funding, part of it came from a $60.3 million federal INFRA grant awarded to Rhode Island in 2019, supporting the renewal of this critical infrastructure.
