Wedoany.com Report on Mar 4th, Significant progress has recently been made on the A5 tunnel project in Madrid, Spain. This project aims to put a section of the A5 highway underground to create a pedestrian-friendly boulevard at ground level. The tunnel is designed to handle a daily traffic capacity of 80,000 vehicles, helping to alleviate surface traffic pressure.

Near the Batán intersection, two tunnel corridors measuring 800 meters and 500 meters in length respectively have been successfully connected. This marks a crucial step in advancing the southern section of the project towards Madrid. Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida witnessed the excavator completing the connection operation on site.

The main structure of the tunnel is expected to be completed this spring, after which system integration work will begin. This includes connecting ventilation systems, emergency exits, surveillance cameras, and exhaust fans to Calle 30.

The first connection operation for this tunnel project was carried out on January 16 near Calle del Olivillo, ultimately linking the tunnel to the surface A5 highway. The 700-meter tunnel formed by that connection, plus an additional 100 meters excavated later, has now been integrated into a single 1.3-kilometer tunnel section.

To date, out of the total 3.2 kilometers of bidirectional tunnel for this project, 2.1 kilometers have been excavated. The slab completion rate has reached 83.5%, covering an area of 77,706 square meters. The project contractor, FCC, stated that based on the current smooth progress, the underground section is expected to open for traffic by the end of the year.
