Ukrzaliznytsia continues to build the European gauge in Ukraine. For the first time, co-financing from the EU's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and the state budget is being used to implement the railway infrastructure project. The project aims to develop the European gauge in Ukraine. It will also increase logistical capacity for both freight and passenger transport.
The total cost of the project is EUR 85.91 million. It will be financed by CEF 2023, the state budget, borrowed funds, and Ukrzaliznytsia's own resources. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2027. Part of the funds have already been allocated in the state budget, and the CEF has made an advance payment.
Last week, Magda Kopczynska, Director General of the European Commission's Directorate General for Transport and Mobility, handed over the signed grant agreement to Oleksandr Pertsovsky, Chairman of the Board of Directors of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia.
The project includes:
Development of feasibility and design documentation for the construction of a 1435 mm gauge railway line in the direction of Lviv and on the sections Lviv - Chernivtsi - Vadul Siret - State border;
Construction and electrification of 1435 mm gauge track on small sections near border crossings;
Electrification of the Chop - Uzhhorod section;
Development of a strategy for the development of the Lviv railway junction.
The project will enable Ukrzaliznytsia to construct and equip four international transport corridors following TEN-T requirements: North Sea-Baltic, Baltic-Black Sea-Aegean, Baltic-Adriatic and Rhine-Danube.
