en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 21st, China's transformer products have a complete range and a well-developed industrial chain. According to industry association estimates, the output value of China's transformer industry in 2025 exceeded 300 billion yuan, with its production volume accounting for over 50% of the global share. A number of influential "powerhouse" enterprises have emerged.
Luo Junjie, Vice President of the China Machinery Industry Federation, made the above statements at a press conference held by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on the 20th.
Luo Junjie explained that transformers are the core equipment of the power system. The total installed capacity of transformers in operation in China is approximately 16 billion kilovolt-amperes, with an annual energy loss of about 250 billion kilowatt-hours, accounting for roughly 40% of the total power generation, transmission, and distribution losses in the country. In recent years, China has promoted the transformation of the industry from "scale expansion" to "quality and efficiency improvement," continuously enhancing energy efficiency levels. The energy efficiency of mainstream transformer products, such as silicon steel transformers and amorphous alloy transformers, has significantly improved; the adoption of high-efficiency energy-saving transformers has accelerated. In 2025, China's total transformer output was approximately 3 billion kilovolt-amperes, and the proportion of energy-saving transformers in operation increased by 10 percentage points compared to 2020.
The "Implementation Plan for High-Quality Development of Energy-Saving Equipment (2026-2028)" recently issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and three other departments proposes that by 2028, the proportion of newly added energy-saving transformers should exceed 75%, and the proportion of energy-saving transformers in service should reach 15%.
Luo Junjie stated that the next steps will focus on technological innovation, tackling key materials such as high-conductivity materials and high-performance insulation materials required for ultra-level-1 efficiency transformers, deepening the integration of digitalization and intelligence, and promoting the intelligent operation of transformers; in response to new demands such as renewable energy power generation, large-scale hydrogen production, and new energy storage, integrated system solutions including scenario-adapted transformers and substations will be proposed.
Furthermore, promotion efforts will be intensified, encouraging grid companies and new energy enterprises to conduct energy-saving and carbon-reduction diagnostics for transformers in service, and supporting the application of high-efficiency silicon steel three-dimensional wound core transformers, large-capacity high-efficiency amorphous alloy three-dimensional wound core transformers, large-capacity solid-state transformers, flexible DC transformers, etc.
