en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 21st, State Grid Corporation of China announced on March 20th that the Anhui-Hubei Back-to-Back Power Grid Interconnection Project commenced construction on the 20th in Susong County, Anqing, Anhui. This power flexibility and mutual support project spanning Anhui and Hubei is a key project included in the national "15th Five-Year Plan" outline. It is also the first power grid project in Anhui Province to adopt the latest flexible DC technology, aiming to build a power flexibility and mutual support hub connecting East China and Central China.
The Anhui-Hubei Back-to-Back Interconnection Project is a key cross-regional power flexibility and mutual support project designated by the National Energy Administration, and it is also the first DC project to commence construction in the inaugural year of the "15th Five-Year Plan". With a total investment of approximately 4.58 billion yuan, the project is scheduled to be completed and operational by 2027. It will involve constructing a ±260 kV flexible DC back-to-back converter station in Susong County, Anqing, with a rated capacity of 3,000 MW, and building 127.7 kilometers of new 500 kV transmission lines.
Anhui and Hubei belong to the East China and Central China regional power grids respectively, and there are differences in their "power language". The project can convert the incoming 500 kV AC power from Anhui into ±260 kV DC power within the converter station, and then convert it into 500 kV AC power compatible with the Hubei power grid. Upon completion, the project will strengthen the interconnection between the Anhui and Hubei power grids and significantly enhance their mutual support capabilities. For example, when Hubei faces tight power supply, Anhui can provide rapid support through this channel, and vice versa. It functions like a massive energy "regulator", effectively achieving peak-shaving complementarity of electricity loads between the two provinces. It also provides a solid guarantee for emergency support between the East China and Central China power grids, making grid operation safer and more reliable, and enabling optimized allocation of energy resources across a broader area.
State Grid stated that the key highlight of the Anhui-Hubei Back-to-Back Interconnection Project lies in its adoption of the most advanced back-to-back flexible DC technology. Compared to conventional DC technology, it possesses three main characteristics: inherent stability, flexible controllability, and resource efficiency. The application of this flexible DC technology will provide crucial support for the integration of new energy sources in Anhui and Hubei, facilitating a smoother and more efficient flow of green energy from west to east and from north to south.
