en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 24th, The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) announced that the Potomac Interceptor sewer pipeline has resumed full-flow operations, concluding nearly two months of emergency repairs. The sewer pipeline ruptured on January 19, resulting in the discharge of approximately 243 million gallons of untreated sewage into the Potomac River.

Constructed in the 1960s, the sewer pipeline was found during emergency repairs to be internally blocked by large rocks and boulders at the collapse site. Mousa Vaughan, Vice President of Engineering at DC Water, stated that these boulders likely originated from backfill materials used during the initial pipeline construction. After installing a bypass pumping system and steel bulkheads, contractors raised the pipe crown, removed the obstructions, and installed a geopolymer lining to reinforce 320-foot sections both upstream and downstream of the affected area. During a briefing on March 17, DC Water CEO David Gadis reported that the bypass system has prevented nearly 2 billion gallons of sewage from entering the river since late January, and bacterial testing results are trending positively.

Permanent repairs for the sewer pipeline are ongoing, including slip-lining a 2,700-foot section, which is expected to take nine months to complete. The current focus has shifted to environmental restoration of the surrounding area, including a 1.5-mile-long dried-up section of the C&O Canal in Maryland. Soil removal is underway in the contaminated zone, to be followed by the installation of organic matting and new soil cover. Gadis indicated that DC Water is assessing other sections of the sewer pipeline to ensure a similar rupture does not occur again. Following a request from Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, President Trump declared a disaster on February 21, authorizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief efforts.
