After years of hard work by many people and the guidance of the K’ómoks First Nation, who patiently walked alongside us on this journey, we are thrilled to see this solution, designed specifically for Cumberland, operational and performing well."

Provincial Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, Christine Boyle, added, "These upgrades mean Cumberland residents will benefit from a cleaner environment and a more reliable wastewater treatment system. The provincial government is pleased to support such projects that enhance community well-being and long-term sustainability. This is a significant milestone for a village that continues to plan carefully for its future."

Construction began in 2023. The planned second phase, involving wetland enhancements, seismic upgrades, and improvements to Maple Creek, is currently undergoing environmental assessment and permitting. This wastewater treatment system upgrade project received funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – Environmental Quality stream. The federal government contributed over $3.8 million, the Province of British Columbia provided over $3.2 million, with additional funds from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Green Municipal Fund. The Canada Community-Building Fund also granted an additional $2.5 million to support the second phase of work.
